Mysterious Melissa - Lemon Balm in the car park (mysterious because nobody knows how she got here 😂) Another wonderful surprise that the pasture has given us, the fragrant Lemon Balm has grown into quite a bush here, we have no clue where from but we are very grateful for it! When you are visiting please take some with you, you can use it in oils, put in it your bath and make tea with it 🫖. It also has many medicinal properties such as: improving brain function, aids digestion & calms anxiety! Dragonflies in the Secret Stream 🪰💦✨ The incredible way wildlife quickly inhabited the Secret Stream after the Goat Willow was removed is an incredible sight to see! We have had swarms of Dragonflies laying their eggs in the stream, flying around landing on leafs, dipping the tips of their bodies into the water to drop their eggs in, and preparing for their next generations. Rudbeckia Fulgida Goldstrum in the nursery 😍🌼🌿 All Rudbeckia are invaluable for pollinating insects. The flowering season is continuous from Summer, all the way through until late autumn. Virtually bomb proof they are widely planted providing colour and structure. Rudbekia can be divided to provide FREE plants easily. They are tolerant of drought and do not need watering. Saponaria Officinalis -Soap Wort- MOTH HOST PLANT 🌿🌸🦋 I really want to promote this wonderful plant mainly because it is beneficial for Moths. It is great for all our pollinators, but Moths are such a neglected species that I think they deserve more attention. Flowers are very romantic in their “wandering” habit, produced in late spring; they wind their way around the border and other plants, giving such a soft pink theme at 60cm. This plant is called many things: Bouncing Bet, Soap Wort, Wild Sweet William; the list goes on and on, and has the substance saponin contained in the roots, so used to be used as soap or cleanser. We have recently added another 'water station' in the Conservation Pasture, for all the insects to be able to get a drink in this extreme heat! It is important to have landing pads for the insects to land on and then drink from; this is important so that they don't drown. We are using old terracotta pots and stones here! Some gorgeous photos Angel captured of the bees enjoying the sweet nectar of the Cardoon on the Long Border 😍 They absolutely LOVE the cardoon; it is a magnet for all the pollinators. It is a great plant to have in your garden, with its giant purple thistle flowers the size of a football, growing 6/8 feet tall, with sensational large serrated silver-grey leaves. Foxgloves in the Nursery 🌷🪻🌿 We still have stock of the Digitalis – Mertonensis – Strawberry Foxglove and the Digitalis Purpurea (Common Foxglove) in the Nursery. A very traditional English woodland plant, ideal for the back of a shady border or woodland area. Foxgloves will self-seed if you are not too tidy and don’t cut off the old flower stalks too quickly, meaning you will never be short of foxgloves in your garden (for free!!). Philladelphus Innocence 🌿🤍 This is a gorgeous variety of Philliadelphus, as it has pale variegated leaves. She is perhaps a little smaller and slower growing than her cousins but still grows into a medium sized deciduous shrub given time. During the Summer it has saucer shaped white intensely fragrant flowers. Good for bees, hoverflies and as you can see orange tip butterflies. This is happening right now and our best chance at helping is to stop feeding the birds until we know it is safe to. Some information from the RSPB webiste: "Trichomonosis is caused by a parasite called Trichomonas gallinae. It typically infects the upper digestive tract of birds. Recently a strain of Trichomonas gallinae may have spilled over to finches, at shared food or water sources, and has led to epidemic mortality across the UK and into mainland Europe. The Alliums have finished flowering, but don't chop them down! They are still a wonderful addition to your border and add height and colour. They are great cuttings for a vase, you could wait until they are dried out enough and cut them at the base and spray with them gold or silver paint for a table decoration - but not just yet!
