Hello my lovelies! I filmed this video a few weeks ago when we had the extreme hot weather and wanted to get you all thinking about why your garden plants suffered so much! The wild plants of the pasture stood up quite well to the extreme weather, thinking out loud, why do garden centre plants need SO much to keep them alive? On another note, a tip from me would be to overplant your borders, visible soil is no good and you want your borders as full as possible to keep the border protected! Why do you think? Humming-bird Hawk-moth spotted at the pasture 🦋🎋🌸 They are absolutely wonderful little creatures that migrate to the UK from Southern Europe every year, it gets it name, very obviously from the 'humming' of its wings, like that of a Hummingbird! The Butterflies are absolutely loving this Hawthorn Tree in Mandys Woodland Garden! 🦋😍🌳 I thought it was a bit odd, and it turns out there are microscopic fichers on the bark, releasing sap! Lobelia – Monets Moment (sorry not for sale 😂) 🌸🌿 This is the only lobelia in the family that does not produce viable seed, so we are propagating from cuttings and this takes time and effort to do. It is exactly the same as our other herbaceous lobelia with attractive green foliage and a very striking rich Pink flower – simply stunning! Persicaria – Amplexicaulis Golden Arrow 😍🌾 This plant is such a bright star in what may be a difficult part of your garden – Golden Arrow literally “shines out” with its gorgeous lime coloured leaves the effect is wonderful. It is incredibly tough and hardy, it will cope with moisture too, returning year after year. It acts as valuable weed-suppressing with a surprisingly bright dark Pink flower, produced in abundance in July through to October. These perennials keep some foliage during the winter and can withstand minus 20 with no problems. Physostegia – Pink Rose Crown 🌸🌿 This form is an American style of the normal white type; With one MAJOR DIFFERENCE it is not so obedient! Gorgeous lilac coloured flowers arrived much later than its English cousin but when they did they were completely forgiven – a much taller plant the colour is superb and the flowering are brilliant food for pollinators. Lobelia Vedrariensis - Producing very dramatic spires of bright electric purple, hood-like flowers on stately, narrow spikes bloom July to September. Adaptable to almost any situation, it is happiest in damp conditions. Being the same vibrant colour of Salvia Amistad, if your garden is not suited to Salvia, maybe this will do the trick? Mysterious Melissa - Lemon Balm in the car park (mysterious because nobody knows how she got here 😂) Another wonderful surprise that the pasture has given us, the fragrant Lemon Balm has grown into quite a bush here, we have no clue where from but we are very grateful for it! When you are visiting please take some with you, you can use it in oils, put in it your bath and make tea with it 🫖. Dragonflies in the Secret Stream 🪰💦✨ The incredible way wildlife quickly inhabited the Secret Stream after the Goat Willow was removed is an incredible sight to see! We have had swarms of Dragonflies laying their eggs in the stream, flying around landing on leafs, dipping the tips of their bodies into the water to drop their eggs in, and preparing for their next generations. Rudbeckia Fulgida Goldstrum in the nursery 😍🌼🌿 All Rudbeckia are invaluable for pollinating insects. The flowering season is continuous from Summer, all the way through until late autumn. Virtually bomb proof they are widely planted providing colour and structure. Rudbekia can be divided to provide FREE plants easily. They are tolerant of drought and do not need watering. Saponaria Officinalis -Soap Wort- MOTH HOST PLANT 🌿🌸🦋 I really want to promote this wonderful plant mainly because it is beneficial for Moths. It is great for all our pollinators, but Moths are such a neglected species that I think they deserve more attention. Flowers are very romantic in their “wandering” habit, produced in late spring; they wind their way around the border and other plants, giving such a soft pink theme at 60cm. This plant is called many things: Bouncing Bet, Soap Wort, Wild Sweet William; the list goes on and on, and has the substance saponin contained in the roots, so used to be used as soap or cleanser. We have recently added another 'water station' in the Conservation Pasture, for all the insects to be able to get a drink in this extreme heat! It is important to have landing pads for the insects to land on and then drink from; this is important so that they don't drown. We are using old terracotta pots and stones here! Some gorgeous photos Angel captured of the bees enjoying the sweet nectar of the Cardoon on the Long Border 😍 They absolutely LOVE the cardoon; it is a magnet for all the pollinators. It is a great plant to have in your garden, with its giant purple thistle flowers the size of a football, growing 6/8 feet tall, with sensational large serrated silver-grey leaves.
