Happy Morning 🌱🍂 Here at Enchanted, we love growing sustainably by harvesting our own seeds and nurturing our nursery from our ‘parent’ plants. This year, we’ve been caring for a few that were left a little soggy, and at one point, we had absolutely no stock! After a year of patience and plenty of TLC, our #Rudbeckiatriloba and #Agastache ‘Liquorice Blue’ have bounced back beautifully. They’re now ready for seed harvesting, ready to be sown in the spring, so you can enjoy these gorgeous plants in your own gardens! As you can see there are many 'weeds' popping up and although these are valuable plants, this herbaceous border is going to be garden plants only. We will be continuing to weed for the coming weeks and preparing the soil before finally placing the plants, changing our minds a few times and then finally planting to complete the border. Cardoon Update for September 🎋🍂 This lovely Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) has finished for the year and is now going to seed! We enjoyed a wonderful show from him this season, with many more flower heads than last year. As I always remind you, the lower leaves act as a stable support for this heavy chap and are crucial in keeping him upright without the need for staking. Now that the leaves have gone over and things are a little floppy, you can simply tuck them behind the sturdier stems for support. Of course, I’ll be leaving the artichoke-like flower heads for our flock of goldfinches in the pasture, while also harvesting seed to sow for next year! The pink and yellow wildflower meadow has gone over quicker than I expected this year. A few centaurea nigra are still popping through, but the main bursts of colour now come from fleabane and ragwort. As we reach the end of this season, it’s important to pause and appreciate the beautiful show that Mother Nature has gifted us. Every year she offers something different, reminding us that we can never fully predict what display she has in store. With my wonderful team of volunteers, we’ll now begin collecting seed from these plants, processing them for the seed dispensary, and preparing to sow for next season. Knautia Macedonica & Verbena Bonariensis 🌸🪻 Two beautiful and very worthy garden plants that have self-seeded in the yard. Both lovely and tall with bee-loving 'ball' flower heads that move in the breeze and provide romance with “wild abandon”. Self-sown seedlings often appear and can be easily moved to a new location while still small. After weeks of watching and waiting, we witnessed the joy of the remaining swallow chick fledging, flying free around the potting shed, guided by its devoted parents. A rare and beautiful moment, especially after the loss of its siblings. After 2 days of the chick spreading its wings ..... the chick was sadly taken out of the sky by a magpie. We’ve all felt the ache of it, the heartbreak of the little one not getting the chance to soar with its parents. Still, we hold hope. Let's talk all things Buddleia and avoiding imported plants! 🪻🌿 I’ve had quite a few people asking me recently about their buddleia, leaves curling, black marks, just not thriving the way it should. It looks like there’s a bit of a disease going around, and I wanted to share a few thoughts from what I’ve seen here at The Enchanted Garden. We’ve had good results using SB Invigorator, it’s a plant-based, non-toxic spray that works well against things like mildew, aphids, and leaf curl. It also acts as a foliar feed. I’m always going to encourage folks to grow from healthy, well-loved plants, and where you can, try to avoid imported stock. Let me know how your plants are doing, and if you’re struggling, don’t worry. There’s always something you can do. Let's talk all things Buddleia and avoiding imported plants! 🪻🌿 I’ve had quite a few people asking me recently about their buddleia, leaves curling, black marks, just not thriving the way it should. It looks like there’s a bit of a disease going around, and I wanted to share a few thoughts from what I’ve seen here at The Enchanted Garden. We’ve had good results using SB Invigorator, it’s a plant-based, non-toxic spray that works well against things like mildew, aphids, and leaf curl. It also acts as a foliar feed. I’m always going to encourage folks to grow from healthy, well-loved plants, and where you can, try to avoid imported stock. Every seed germinated. Everyone! It’s like nature herself wanted to make a point. Apollo #Asclepiastuberosa, known in America as “butterfly weed,” is an absolute magnet for pollinators, butterflies, moths; all of them come in dancing.
