Strawberry Tree – Arbutus Unedo -18 litres

Arbutus Unedo, known as the Strawberry tree, is a small evergreen tree which produces bright-red fruits in the autumn, along with pendulous clusters of white, urn shaped flowers in November. The fruits are popular with birds and although can be eaten by humans, are unpleasant. With its evergreen bay like leaves and rich terracotta brown, tactile, peeling bark and dark evergreen bay like leaves, the feature packed Strawberry tree is very popular.

Did you know that the Long Drive in Heligan, Cornwall was originally planted up with the first saplings of these, in 1832? The Long Drive was later referred to as ‘the finest in the country’ by the Gardener’s Chronicle. Not bad for some seeds brought back from Nepal!

Tolerant of pollution, acid and alkaline soils and exposed coastal positions, Arbutus unedo is quite resilient but will prefer a sheltered spot in full sun. This evergreen tree is spreading in form, reaching 5 x 4 metres in 20 years and makes a wonderful addition to smaller gardens and is ideal for screening purposes. We have only one in our gardens here, but it is lovely and the bees love the late white blossoms.

These strawberrys are rich in antioxidants, tannins, vitamins, pectins 7 especially rich in Vitamin C.

Strawberry tree fruit are also a natural remedy for combatting respiratory, and above all intestinal inflammation. Strawberry tree infusions are rich in antioxidants and tannins and can be used as a urinary antiseptic, while the decoction of strawberry tree leaves and roots can help to combat rheumatic pains.

You can also make jams, syrups, liqueurs & marmalade! We look forward to our own Enchanted Garden’s Strawberry Tree Marmalade!
