Mirabillis Jalapa (four O clock plant)
Warning, this has poisonous foliage.
Bushy, self-seeding plant. Buzy Lizzy like flowers come in yellow, pink and white or in a combination of all 3 colours on one flower. Tuberous roots, easy to keep. The flowers remain closed in the morning, and open in the afternoons! Very quirky and engaging plant, likes shade or sun and can be used as colourful bedding. In woodland areas in the US they form potato-like tubers which can measure 2 feet in diameter.
This plant is a favorite food for Japanese beetles. However, because of its poisonous foliage rarely do they get to finish their meal. It is important to note that Four O’Clocks are also poisonous to people and animals, so avoid planting it if you have small children or pets.
