We grow “Sweet Genovese”, which is the traditional aromatic large leaf taste of everything Italian. So many culinary uses for Pesto, Pizza, Salads the list is endless. The seed germinates well at the right temperature but all Basil will “bolt” very quickly which means that you need to harvest ALL the time to stop it producing flowers as this will extend the life of your plant.
Also, believe it or not even though they are an Italian Icon and when we think of Italy we think sun & heat the actual plants deteriorate rather rapidly in a pot in full sun. If you want to keep them producing leaf a semi shaded windowsill out of full sun is best. You would also be forgiven for thinking that they dont need watering very often – the key is to only water from the bottom of the pot and never the top of the plant as we have found that this means they develop soggy leaves and furry mildew.
